Hands-On With WPLP Compliance 

In this section, I’ll explain the process of setting up WPLP Compliance on a WordPress website.

Account Setup and Installation

First, head over to the plugin’s official website and sign up for an account. You can create a free account or choose a paid plan depending on your preferences.

Once you’ve created an account, go to your dashboard and download the two plugin files (WP Legal Pages and WP Cookie Consent). 

Upload each file to the plugins section of your site and then install and activate these plugins.

Creating Legal Pages

Once activated, you’ll be redirected to the dashboard of WPLP Compliance. Here, you’ll find the option to create a legal page as well as access other features via Quick Links.

WPLP Compliance’ one-click setup process makes creating compliant legal pages incredibly simple. Just select a template, fill in basic details, and the system generates everything you need. You get four templates in the free version, plus a lot more when you become a Pro user.

I chose the Standard Privacy Policy template, after which the plugin asked me to fill in a few basic details and choose the appropriate sections for my policy.

Once I did, the plugin drafted a custom privacy policy and showed me a preview.




Then all I had to do was click “Create and Edit” and I had my new privacy policy ready to be published. You can follow the same steps to create other legal pages for your site so that you are in compliance with the local law and regulations. 

You can also configure the Settings of the WP Legal Pages to define how the tool should create your templates. The following tabs are present in the Settings menu:

Enable (or disable) relevant settings based on your preferences and click “Saves Changes” to apply them. 

Setting Up a Cookie Banner 

WPLP Compliance also lets you configure a cookie banner for your WordPress site. 

To do so, I first had to select which privacy law to follow. Looking at the setup screen, I selected “General Data Protection Regulation” as my default privacy law for worldwide visitors. For geo-targeting, I checked the “Worldwide” option rather than limiting the banner to just EU countries or selected regions. 

In the Configuration section, I enabled Consent Logging to maintain proper GDPR compliance records. I also enabled the Data Request Form, which allows visitors to request their personal data. The plugin provides a handy shortcode you can copy and paste onto any page where youI want this form to appear. 

WPLP Compliance also gives you the option to show the cookie consent as a banner, popup, or widget. I chose the Banner option and selected a simple template with Accept, Decline, and Cookie Settings buttons. The default message reads: “This website uses cookies to improve your experience. We’ll assume you’re ok with this, but you can opt-out if you wish.”  Unlike some compliance solutions that limit how many times your banner can be displayed, WPLP offers unlimited banner pageviews, even on high-traffic websites.

After completing all these settings, I clicked the “Finish Setup” button to implement the cookie consent system on my site.

Beyond the basic setup, you can also configure several other important settings in the plugin. For example, you can toggle options like Enable Cookie Notice (this activates the banner across your site), Support IAB TCF v2.2 (this helps with advertising consent standards if you run ads), and Google Additional Consent Mode (better integration with Google services like Analytics).

You can choose from different compliance types like GDPR (European regulations), CCPA (California law), or LGPD (Brazilian privacy law) depending on where your visitors are from. I went with GDPR since it’s the most comprehensive and covers multiple regions.

The Message Heading and Cookie Message can be customized to fit your site’s tone. You don’t have to use the default legal-sounding text if you prefer something more casual. For geo-targeting, you can set it to Worldwide or limit it to specific regions. 

When setting up your cookie banner, you can customize how it appears, where it’s positioned, and how it behaves when visitors interact with it. The plugin offers pre-built templates you can apply with one click, or you can auto-generate a design that matches your website’s look.

Under Design, you can adjust the banner’s appearance to match your branding. You can change colors, opacity, borders, and even upload your logo.

In the Cookie List section, you can define different cookie categories your site uses and provide descriptions for each.

The Script Blocker is essential; this is where you add your tracking scripts so they only load after consent is given.

You can also set Cookie Expiry (default is 1 Year) and enable Safe Mode for additional security.

Other tabs include A/B Testing to experiment with different banner designs and Language settings for multilingual support.
