Celebrating Women’s Contributions to WordPress: A Call for Women-Centric Events

Have you heard the news?
The WordPress Community Team is rallying local WordPress communities to ‘celebrate, empower, and inspire women’ ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8.

In a post shared on the Make WordPress Community blog, contributor Pooja Derashri called for community organizers to establish women-focused events where women and gender minorities can share their challenges and successes, network, and gain the confidence to take on leadership roles, all in a welcoming and safe space.
Eager to get involved?
Below, you’ll find all the details about the proposed events and how you can get involved.
Women of WordPress: A Vision for 2025
“By organizing women-centric WordPress events on International Women’s Day, we can spark meaningful conversations and encourage more women to join, lead, and contribute to WordPress,” wrote Ms. Derashri in a post outlining a vision for what women-centric WordPress events could look like.
Ideas included:
- Inspiring Stories – Putting inspiring women center stage to share their experiences and successes in the world of WordPress and related fields.
- Learning and Growth – Developing workshops, hands-on learning activities, and team challenges to help women build their confidence and capabilities in fields such as WordPress development, blogging, entrepreneurship, and more.
- Networking – Creating a welcoming environment where women can meet, connect, and establish strong networks built on support, encouragement, and empowerment.
- Mentorship – Providing opportunities for WordPress rookies to pair up with veteran users for guidance and support, not only during events themselves but for a long time afterward.
The outline also calls for follow-up events and meetups. After all, the strongest communities are those that stay in touch and continue supporting one another well after they first meet
WordPress International Women’s Day Events – How to Get Involved
Feeling inspired? Keen to contribute and help celebrate women in WordPress? With a little under three months to go before International Women’s Day 2025, there’s still plenty of time to get involved.
Here’s how:
- Connect with existing groups – Are there local WordPress meetup groups in your area you could reach out to about hosting an event? If not, maybe other women-centric or tech-focused groups and organizations would be happy to lend their support.
- Apply as an Official WordPress Event – Fill in the Creative WordPress Events Form to register an official WordPress event. Once approved, you’ll get an official website for your event on the WordPress Events platform. A small amount of funding (typically $100 – $500) may also be approved to support your event.
- Contribute Your Design Skills – If graphic design is your forte, the WordPress Community Team are also looking for volunteers to create materials such as a banner, logo, and sticker designs to celebrate WordPress Women’s Day.
You can volunteer to provide these services by commenting on Pooja Derashri’s blog post at:

Celebrating Women’s Contributions to WordPress: A Final Note
The WordPress ecosystem wouldn’t be where it is today without the invaluable contributions of women and gender minorities.

Both WordPress 5.6 and 6.4 -named after iconic females Nina Simone and Shirley Horn respectively- were led by all-women and non-binary contributors. Meanwhile, platforms like the Women in WordPress podcast are chock-full of inspiring stories of innovation, leadership and community-building from underrepresented voices in tech.
Here at WPLift, we’ll be doing our part to champion the women in our community by continuing to share positive news of events and activities planned for WordPress Women’s Day.
